[Sheffield Park Cricket] A framed albumen photograph - Mr John Gilbert's Team/Played at Sheffield Park, September 18th, 1886. Taken in front of Pavilion, with 21 players, officials (and probably some '12th men') all named; 29 x 33cm. (approx.) including legend and surround, within a mount and in a contemp. wooden frame. *the old ground (opened in 1845) was enlarged and greatly enhanced by the third (the cricketing) Earl in 1877, with the famed Pavilion opened in 1883. The ground saw some nine first class matches - including five (from 1884) against the visiting Australians on commencing their English tour. John Gilbert (d.1896), an all-rounder, was a great stalwart of Fletchling C.C. (whose home ground it was); his 250 not out against Newick in 1884 a most notable innings. The photogaphed team was against the Rev. Walter Summers (of Danehill) XI. *see Roger Packham's Cricket in the Park (2009), especially pp.224/225. Sold with another copy (though image faded)
